Single rainbows are inspiring, double rainbows are rare, but tertiary rainbows have been elusive until a meteorologist provided guidelines that showed how to find them

In a feat of technology tweaking that would rival MacGyver, a team of researchers from the University of California, Davis has transformed everyday iPhones into medical-quality imaging and chemical detection devices. With materials that cost about as much as a typical app, the decked-out smartphones are able to use their heightened senses to perform detailed microscopy and spectroscopy.

The OSA Foundation announced today that author, entrepreneur, and investor Milton Chang has donated 1,000 copies of his new book, Toward Entrepreneurship: Establishing a Successful Technology Business, to the Foundation. Proceeds from sales of the books will be donated to the OSA Foundation and matched 100 percent by the Optical Society (OSA). Books must be purchased through the OSA Foundation website to qualify.

Light-matter interaction at the nanometer scale has turned into a very fast-growing field of research known as nano-optics. To highlight breakthroughs in the specific areas of nano-optics known as nanoplasmonics and metamaterials, the editors of the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optical Materials Express (OMEx) have published a special Focus Issue on Nanoplasmonics and Metamaterials.

Google’s vice president of access networks, Milo Medin, is set to give a keynote presentation at the plenary session of the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), taking place in Los Angeles March 4 – 8, 2012.
