A new laser-based system, however, that blasts microscopic jets of drugs into the skin could soon make getting a shot as painless as being hit with a puff of air.

OSA co-hosts two events emphasizing economic importance of optics and photonics for federal agency and congressional staff

The Optical Society (OSA) today announced the launch of a new annual Advanced Solid State Lasers Congress (ASSL). The event combines OSA’s Advanced Solid State Photonics (ASSP), Advances in Optical Materials (AIOM), and Fiber Lasers and Applications (FILAS) Topical Meetings into a comprehensive conference and exhibition.

The Optical Society (OSA), in conjunction with the IEEE Photonics Society, SPIE and the American Physical Society (APS), is co-hosting a congressional briefing on the National Academy of Sciences’ (NAS) recently-released report, Optics and Photonics: Essential Technologies for Our Nation. Leading optical scientists and engineers will discuss the report and the growing economic importance of optics and photonics.

The OSA Foundation announced today that University Science Books, the publisher of Anthony “Tony” Siegman’s well-known book Lasers, is donating 300 copies of the text to the Foundation for re-sale to raise money for the Siegman International Summer School on Lasers in memory of the author who passed away last year. The effort is part of an endowment campaign launched earlier this year to permanently fund the summer school, which aims to honor Seigman for the tremendous contributions he made to the scientific community and his passion for teaching while providing optics graduate students around the world with the opportunity to experience a program of lectures, networking opportunities, poster presentations, research sharing and more.
