Members of the Optical Society (OSA) from around the United States are on Capitol Hill today to speak with lawmakers about science policy issues, federal investments in research and development (R&D) and proposed funding levels in the upcoming FY 2013 appropriations bills.

Next week, leaders from telecom, datacom and computing will convene for the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC)—the premier optical communications event where experts from industry and academia share their results, experiences, and insights on the future of hot topic areas such as cloud and datacenter networking, software-defined networks, photonic integration and more. More than 12,000 attendees and an exhibit with 550 companies are expected.

Exhibit hall programs to cover datacom, cloud services, software-defined networking, network infrastructure, service provider integration and more

Services like Google Maps use algorithms to determine the fastest route from point A to point B—even factoring in real-time traffic information as you travel to redirect you if, for example, a parade is blocking part of your route. Now, a team of researchers from Spain and Japan have achieved this kind of traffic control for the connections in optical networks by using a new dynamic network management system—and it does Google Maps one better.

The Optical Society’s (OSA) Corporate Associates program announced the launch of its new Enabled by Optics campaign. The program is designed to raise awareness of the importance of optics and photonics technology among new audiences. The campaign will emphasize the extraordinary role optics has played in furthering innovation and the critical impact it has in everyday life.
