The Optical Society (OSA) and the IEEE Photonics Society are pleased to announce that Kazuro Kikuchi of the University of Tokyo in Japan is the recipient of the 2014 John Tyndall Award.

OSA announced today that Stewart Wills has joined the organization as the new editor and content director for its monthly news magazine, Optics & Photonics News.

It was the day after Thanksgiving in 1981, and like most others across the nation, Rangaswamy “Sri” Srinivasan, a researcher at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York, had brought some turkey with him to work. The difference between Srinivasan and everyone else was that the scientist had no plans to eat the leftovers. He was planning to fire a laser at them!

The International OSA Network of Students (IONS™) will host the IONS/KOALA Conference at the University of Sydney, Australia, Nov. 25–29.

OSA and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) are proud to announce the 2014 Herbert Walther Award will be presented to Massimo Inguscio of the University of Florence, Italy for groundbreaking experiments in modern atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics, from spectroscopy of metastable helium to Anderson localization of ultra-cold atoms, and for his scientific leadership world-wide.
