The Optical Society (OSA) today praised the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) decision to adopt a resolution declaring 2015 the International Year of Light.

The Optical Society’s (OSA) Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2012, wrapped up Rochester, N.Y. yesterday, featuring nearly 900 presentations over five days—96 years after OSA was founded in this very city. Collocated with the American Physical Society Division of Laser Science’s annual meeting, Laser Science XXVII, FiO brought together more than 1,700 attendees—a significant increase over last year—covering the latest advances in all areas of optics and photonics – from adaptive optics and optical sensing to silicon photonics and quantum information science.

The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that its members have elected Philip Russell of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany as its 2013 vice president. Three directors at large were also chosen during this year's election: Susana Marcos of Instituto de Optica, CSIC, in Spain, Lynn E. Nelson of AT&T Labs in Middletown, N.J., and Gregory J. Quarles of B.E. Meyers and Co., Inc. in Redmond, Wash.

The 2013 Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC),the world’s leading conference for optical communications and networking professionals, today announced its preliminary line-up of keynote speakers for the plenary session and Service Provider Summit programs. Caio Bonilha, president of Telbras in Brazil and Nick McKeown, professor of engineering and computer science at Stanford University, will present two of the keynote addresses during the OFC/NFOEC plenary session, the conference’s most widely attended event, planned for Tuesday, March 19.

Spiders use their silk to catch lunch. Now physicists are using it to catch light. New research shows that natural silk could be an eco-friendly alternative to more traditional ways of manipulating light, such as through glass or plastic fiber optic cables.
