The Board of Directors of The Optical Society (OSA) announced today that Stephen E. Harris has been elected as the Society’s newest Honorary Member. Harris was chosen for his “pioneering and profoundly influential contributions to the science of light, including optical parametric emission, lasing without inversion, electromagnetically induced transparency, and single cycle optical pulse generation.”

Imagine giving a presentation to a roomful of important customers when suddenly the projector fails. You whip out your smartphone, beam your PowerPoint presentation onto the conference room screen, and are back in business within seconds. This career-saving application and others like it are the promise of a new generation of ultra-small projectors. Now researchers from Japan and Poland have taken an important step toward making such devices more versatile and easier to integrate into portable electronic devices.

The Optical Society (OSA) Board of Directors voted to confirm the appointment of George Bayz as Treasurer, an officer role of the Society, starting Jan. 1, 2014.

The Optical Society (OSA) Board of Directors voted today to rename the OSA Distinguished Service Award to the Stephen D. Fantone Distinguished Service Award.

The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that its members have elected Alan E. Willner of the University of Southern California, USA as its 2014 vice president. Three directors at large were also chosen during this year's election: Anne Tropper of the University of Southampton, UK; Adam Wax of Duke University, USA; and Xi-Cheng Zhang of the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, USA.
