The Optical Society (OSA) has commended the United Nations for declaring 2015 the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015). The resolution was adopted late last week at the 68th session of the U.N. General Assembly in Paris. OSA is one of six founding scientific sponsors of IYL 2015 that worked to obtain the formal declaration.

A new optical device puts the power to detect eye disease in the palm of a hand. The tool—about the size of a hand-held video camera—scans a patient’s entire retina in seconds and could aid primary care physicians in the early detection of a host of retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

The Optical Society (OSA) today announced its journal, Advances in Optics and Photonics, has been approved for indexing in Thomson Reuters’® Web of Science™, the Scientific, Technical and Medical publishing industry’s leading citation database.

The Optical Society (OSA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that 71 OSA Members have been elected as the newest class of OSA Fellow Members.
