  • The Optical Society (OSA) today released a statement in support of U.S. President Barack Obama’s proposed Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative. The program, announced yesterday as part of the president’s Fiscal Year 2014 Budget proposal, is aimed at helping researchers and scientists find new ways to treat, cure, and possibly even prevent brain disorders and diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and autism.

  • The Optical Society (OSA) today announced its worldwide network of Student Chapters has grown to more than 300. Late last month, the OSA Student Chapter at the University of Victoria in Canada was established—bringing the total to 301 Student Chapters in 56 countries.

  • The OSA Foundation and Corning Incorporated recently named Robert Palmer of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany the 2013 Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition winner.

  • After five days of sessions, workshops, panels, show floor activities, short courses and special events, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) wrapped up in Anaheim, Calif. yesterday.

  • Testifying on Capitol Hill today, the Optical Society’s (OSA) CEO Elizabeth Rogan called for sustained federal investments in research and development (R&D) funding for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
