A droplet of clear liquid can bend light, acting as a lens. Now, by exploiting this well-known phenomenon, researchers have developed a new process to create inexpensive high quality lenses that will cost less than a penny apiece.

The CLEO: 2014 co-sponsors (APS, IEEE Photonics Society, OSA) and Laser Focus World today announced Daylight Solutions as the winner of this year’s CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award.

The Optical Society (OSA) today commended the U.S. Fast-Track Action Committee on Optics and Photonics (FTAC-OP) for recommendations related to investments in optics and photonics research in their newly released report, Building a Brighter Future with Optics and Photonics.

In dense, urban centers around the world, many people live and work in dim and narrow streets surrounded by tall buildings that block sunlight. And as the global population continues to rise and buildings are jammed closer together, the darkness will only spread.
