The Optical Society (OSA) and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) announced that the 2016 Herbert Walther Award will be presented to Peter Zoller, Institute for Theoretical Physics, Universität Innsbruck, Austria, for his pioneering discoveries and development of new interdisciplinary quantum science that unifies quantum optics, atomic, molecular, optical and condensed matter which have opened new paths toward future applications in quantum technology.

OFC 2016, the world’s leading conference for optical communications and networking professionals, today announced its line-up of keynote speakers for the 2016 plenary session. On Tuesday, March 22, Yasuhiko Arakawa, University of Tokyo, Japan, Andre Fuetsch, AT&T, USA, and Daniel Kraft, Singularity University and IntelliMedicine, USA, will take the stage to highlight the latest developments in semiconductor nanotechnologies, optical network evolution and trends in data-driven intelligent medicine.

By converting sunlight into usable energy, solar thermal devices could become an important part of a sustainable future. To that end, researchers have developed a new solar-light-absorbing surface that can have almost any design, pattern, and color – useful for turning building facades and roofs into energy-capturing exteriors without sacrificing aesthetics.

The Optical Society (OSA) is partnering Plug and Play, a business accelerator, to provide optics and photonics-related startup companies the opportunity to pitch and promote their innovate ideas and products to a network of 300 tech startups and 180 investors during the Plug and Play Internet of Things (IoT) EXPO, 10 December 2015 at Plug and Play’s corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, USA.

The Optical Society (OSA) to host an incubator meeting on Levitated Optomechanics on Thursday, 3 December and Friday, 4 December 2015. The incubator will seek to discuss the innovative technologies surrounding nano-optomechanics and address the many questions surrounding optically levitated nano-particle systems. The incubator will be hosted by Peter Parker, University College, London, UK; Mishkat Bhattacharya, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, USA, and Nick Vamivakas, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, USA.
