The Optical Society (OSA) and the IEEE Photonics Society are pleased to announce that Randy Giles, director of the optical subsystems and advanced photonics department at Bell Labs Alcatel-Lucent, is the recipient of the 2010 John Tyndall Award.

The Optical Society (OSA) today announced it is launching a new peer-reviewed journal focusing on biomedical optics and photonics. Biomedical Optics Express will launch this fall with monthly issues, joining OSA’s portfolio of 12 peer-reviewed optics journals.

As 2009 drew to a close many OSA Corporate Members saw exciting uses for their breakthrough technologies emerge in the mainstream marketplace. From outer space to art museums, optics technology plays a key role in enabling applications in a variety of vital markets.

The general and technical program co-chairs of the 2010 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) today announced that this year’s conference will be dedicated to Charles Kao. Kao won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his “groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication.”

Industry luminary Dr. Vinton Cerf of Google will keynote the 2010 Executive Forum, co-sponsored by the Optical Society (OSA) and Lightwave, and held in conjunction with OFC/NFOEC 2010 in San Diego.
