Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new imaging system that enables high-speed, three-dimensional (3-D) imaging of microscopic pre-cancerous changes in the esophagus or colon.

The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is pleased to announce Vyas Akondi of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, India, as the recipient of the 2011 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Student Travel Grant for the Imaging and Applied Optics: OSA Optics and Photonics Congress. The grant was started by Optical Research Associates (ORA®), now the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys, as a memorial to ORA's former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert.

The first-ever OSA-CIOMP summer session will provide an opportunity for physics students to further their education in the field of optics and photonics by interacting with world-renowned instructors, local professors and fellow students. Participants will also be able to present their research and receive feedback from those in the field of laser science.

The Optical Society (OSA), along with co-sponsors SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and the Materials Research Society (MRS), have selected their 2011-2012 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows. Anthony Augustine, a recent graduate of Stanford University, will serve as the Arthur H. Guenther Congressional Fellow (co-sponsored by OSA and SPIE) and Laura Povlich, a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, will serve as the OSA/MRS Congressional Fellow.
