OSA Hosts 2018 Laser Congress

Reveals Latest Technological Advances and Applications

The 2018 OSA Laser Congress will offer a comprehensive view of the latest technological advances in solid state lasers as well as the applications of laser technologies for industrial products and markets. New research emphasizes the spectrum of solid state lasers from materials research to applied science and design innovations, and explores two main areas of focus for industry: materials processing and applications for high power lasers.

Noteworthy talks include:

-          OSA Light the Future Speaker Series: Directed Energy Propulsion - Enabling the First Interstellar Missions

Philip Lubin, Professor, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, Calif., USA (Tuesday, 6 Nov., 11:30 a.m. EST)

Philip Lubin is affiliated with the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative, a project originated by internet investor and science philanthropist Yuri Milner and world-renowned cosmologist Stephen Hawking, to focus on space exploration and the search for life in the Universe. Breakthrough Starshot is a $100 million USD research and engineering program aiming to demonstrate proof of concept for light-propelled nanocrafts that could potentially fly at 20 percent of light speed and capture images and other scientific data in our nearest star system, Alpha Centauri.

-          Plenary: Harnessing Quantum Light Science for Tabletop X-Ray Lasers, with Applications in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Margaret Murnane, Fellow, Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA); Distinguished Professor of Physics, University of Colorado at Boulder and NIST, Boulder, Colo., USA (Monday, 5 Nov., 8:30 a.m. EST)

Emphasizing a host of applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology, this talk will introduce and review recent developments in high harmonic generation (HHG) sources, as well as exciting advances in spectroscopy of materials.

-          Plenary: Industrial Femtosecond Lasers for Material Processing

Norman HodgsonCoherent, Inc., Santa Clara, Calif., USA (Monday, 5 Nov., 9:15 a.m. EST)

This talk will provide an overview of the different femtosecond laser architectures, their state-of-the-art performance, and future developments, concluding with a presentation of the main industrial ultrafast laser applications.
