The Optical Society Hosts Special Networking and Member Events During CLEO:2017
WASHINGTON — The Optical Society (OSA), the leading professional association in optics and photonics, will host a variety of special events during the 2017 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California, from 14-19 May 2017. The events feature unique networking and professional development programs, a reception with OSA Publishing editors and special opportunities for OSA members and their families.
Cheeky Scientist Workshops: Cheeky Scientist workshops assist graduate students and postdocs transition to industry by helping them better themselves as business professionals. The workshops provide attendees with a strong understanding of what it takes to have a tailored industry resume and how to showcase transferable skills. Sponsored by the OSA Foundation, attendees can join two career-building sessions:
- The Modern Job Search: Sunday, 14 May, 13:00–14:30
- Networking: An Art & Science: Sunday, 14 May, 15:00–16:30
Understanding Unconscious Bias: Sponsored in by OSA, APS and IEEE, this training will discuss how unconscious bias can result in best and brightest talent made to feel unwelcome, invisible, and not important to the success of the organization. During the session, participants will explore concepts and engage participants to better understand implicit bias, increase awareness and understanding the impact on organizational culture and identify ways to promote greater engagement with diversity and inclusion. There is limited space and interested attendees should RSVP online. The two sessions will take place Monday, 15 May at 14:00–15:30 and 16:00–17:30.
Diversity & Inclusion in Optics and Photonics Reception: Jointly hosted by OSA, APS and IEEE, this special reception provides an opportunity for colleagues in the optics and photonics community to learn, share and engage while discussing the important topic of diversity in the field. The event takes place Monday, 15 May from 17:00—19:30.
OIDA VIP Industry Leadership Speed Meetings Lunch: Sponsored by Go!Foton, the OSA Industry Development Associates lunch brings together industry executives to share their business experience with young professionals, recent graduates and students. The informal networking lunch will be followed by a transition to “speed meetings” – brief, small-group visits with each executive to discuss industry trends or career topics. The lunch takes place Tuesday 16 May from 12:00—13:30. Students or recent graduates interested in attending can RSVP: vipevents@osa.org.
Alternative Careers Paths in Optics and Photonics: Sponsored by The OSA Foundation, this panel discussion features professionals who have leveraged their optics degrees in a unique way forging an alternative career path. This program will open your eyes to the many career paths you can take utilizing your degree. This program will be held on Tuesday, 16 May, 13:00—15:00, Hilton San Jose. It is complimentary for OSA members, however there is limited space and interested attendees should RSVP online.
Meet the OSA Editors’ Reception: Curious about the OSA Journal process or have an idea for a possible feature issue? Join OSA Publishing’s journal editors for conversation and refreshments during CLEO:2017. Topics that can be covered include best practices when submitting a manuscript; elements of a useful manuscript review and criteria editors look for in submitted manuscripts. The reception takes place Tuesday, 16 May at 17:00 in the Market Terrace of the San Jose Convention Center. All are welcome to attend.
OSA Members, Family and Friends Event - Computer History Museum: OSA members and their guests are invited to attend a one-hour docent-led tour of the Computer History Museum located in Mountain View, Calif. The museum is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of computer history and is home to the largest international collection of computing artifacts in the world. The tour takes place Wednesday, 17 May from 10:00—12:45. Advanced registration is required. RSVP to: pwimmer@osa.org.
