Optics Community Mourns the Loss of Colleagues Dr. Stefan Günster and
Marcus Turowski, Laser Zentrum, Hannover, Germany

WASHINGTON — The Optical Society is saddened to announce the loss of Dr. Stefan Günster and Marcus Turowski, employees of Laser Zentrum, Hannover, Germany. The men were hiking in Ventana Canyon, Tucson, Arizona, USA on Sunday, 19 June 2016 and suffered heat exhaustion. Due to the extreme high temperatures in the local area, the two men passed away from heat exhaustion. This is an on-going police investigation and the police have contacted their families and loved ones.

“Our sincere sympathies go out to the families, friends and colleagues of Dr. Günster and Mr. Turowski,” said Elizabeth Rogan, CEO, The Optical Society. “These men were highly respected and well-published in their field. Their influence on the optics industry will be missed.”

As the Tucson area remains under an excessive heat warning through the rest of the week, attendees to The Optical Society’s Optical Interference Coating (OIC) Conference and Exhibition are encouraged to stay indoors. Temperatures will reach dangerous levels during the mid-morning hours, and remain dangerous through the early evening hours. Those in the Tucson area have been asked by law enforcement to be safe and limit time spent outdoors.
