Nobel Laureate Steven Chu Delivers OSA Light the Future Keynote at Asia Communications and Photonics Conference

Former U.S. Energy Secretary and OSA Fellow will share outlook on the impact of optics

WASHINGTONThe Optical Society (OSA), the leading global professional association in optics and photonics, will host the latest in its centennial Light the Future speaker series on 3 November, 10:00 – 11:00 during the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP) in Wuhan, China. Nobel Laureate, former U.S. Secretary of Energy and a fellow of The Optical Society, Dr. Steven Chu will explore how optics has revolutionized scientific discoveries in energy and biomedicine, among other fields, and illustrate how optics and photonics will continue to impact technology.

Dr. Chu, an OSA Fellow, is the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Physics and Professor of Molecular & Cellular Physiology in the Medical School at Stanford University, and continues his research work in microscopy. Dr. Chu was the first scientist in a U.S. presidential cabinet and the longest serving U.S. Energy Secretary. Prior to his cabinet post, he was the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and held a Professorship in Physics, Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley.

With 10 patents and 260 papers published in atomic and polymer physics, biophysics, biology, biomedicine and batteries, Dr. Chu is an accomplished inventor and explorer. In 1997, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for laser cooling and atom trapping. He holds 26 Honorary degrees and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

The Light the Future speaker series will tour eight international cities as part of The Optical Society’s Centennial program, featuring visionaries, futurists and Nobel Laureates discussing how science affects our lives every day.
The series kicked off in  February of this year in Washington, D.C. with Ira Flatow, host of Science Friday, and has featured Mary Lou Jepsen at OFC 2016; Ray Kurzweil and Michio Kaku at FiO/LS 2016. Upcoming Light the Future events include:

4-8 December:
Professor Sir David Payne, University of Southampton, Highfield and OSA Fellow
Photonics India
Kanpur, India

The schedule will be updated at www.osa.org/lightthefuture.  All sessions are free and open to the public and media. RSVP at lightthefuture@osa.org. Additional information can be found by following #OSA100LTF @OpticalSociety on Twitter.

Most Light the Future presentations will be recorded and available at: osa.org/100  or on The Optical Society’s YouTube channel.
