OSA Applauds President Obama's Focus on Innovation, Manufacturing and Research in State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29, 2014—The Optical Society (OSA) today commended U.S. President Barack Obama for his commitment to science and technology issues—including funding for research and development, and manufacturing innovation—in yesterday’s State of the Union address. OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan released the following statement:

“For the second year in a row, President Obama has placed a strong emphasis on what we in the optics and photonics industry know is a key economic driver—U.S. leadership in high-tech manufacturing. The manufacturing hubs in North Carolina and Ohio launched by the Obama Administration last year as part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation are a prime example of public-private partnerships creating jobs.  We applaud President Obama for placing an emphasis on the importance of high-tech manufacturing in the United States.

“Innovation begins well before manufacturing facilities are built. It starts with the ability of scientists to engage in critical basic research projects that are supported by federal dollars. OSA stands with President Obama in calling on Congress to reverse last year’s cuts to basic research funding.  Federally-funded research has led to many of today’s technologies that are enabled by optics and photonics—from the Internet and smartphones to lasers and medical imaging. Basic research is essential to supporting innovation and achieving economic growth.

“Last night, President Obama referred to 2014 as the ‘year of action.’ OSA and its partners are taking action to advance the goals of the National Photonics Initiative. We urge both the Administration and the U.S. Congress to work hard to ensure the U.S. remains a leader in scientific research and advanced manufacturing.”
