Laser Light Engines, Inc. (LLE) recently announced it has entered the optical metrology market with its first shipment of the company’s DSG-265™ despeckled GREEN color modules for an OEM application outside of the cinema industry. LLE says their current patent-pending despeckling technology is helping to revolutionize cinema with cleaner, brighter images, and this new shipment indicates that other industries are ready to take advantage of the same production-ready technology. The unit was shipped to an undisclosed customer who will incorporate the laser into precision 3-D metrology systems that will be sold to end-users such as automakers, jet engine manufacturers, mobile phone makers, and other applications where extreme precision and high throughput is required.
KLA-Tencor Corporation announced NanoPoint™, a new family of patented technologies for its 2900 Series defect inspection system. NanoPoint represents an entirely new way to discover and monitor defects, at optical speed and on existing optical defect inspection equipment. NanoPoint's value has already been demonstrated on early metal layers, where line-edge roughness (LER) on dense pattern had previously limited the ability to detect tiny yield-killing defects inline at advanced nodes. Multiple NanoPoint systems have been installed at leading logic, foundry and memory chip manufacturers in North America, Europe and Asia.
Ibsen Photonics launched a new FREEDOM UV spectrometer platform for OEM supply to manufacturers of analytical instruments. The FREEDOM platform combines compact size and cost efficiency with high performance and flexibility in choice of detector system. Due to its robustness and thermally stable operation, the FREEDOM UV spectrometer is particularly well suited for integration into high performance industrial instruments. The ultra-compact size of only 25 x 48 x 16 mm makes FREEDOM one of the smallest spectrometers on the market.
Business Partnerships and Agreements
Thorlabs recently added scientific camera capabilities to its portfolio by acquiring Digital Video Camera Company (DVC). Located in Austin, Texas, DVC specializes in the design and manufacture of high-performance digital imaging solutions for scientific, industrial and life sciences applications. Thorlabs’ initial step into the life sciences market began more than 10 years ago with the development of its Optical Coherence Tomography systems. The company says the acquisition of DVC is yet another step to providing tools and systems for life science researchers. DVC will operate under the name Thorlabs Scientific Imaging (TSI).
CVI Laser Optics announced an expanded European relationship with its distributor, Acal BFi. The agreement covers sales and support of optical components and assemblies in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. CVI says the expanded partnership will bring their European customers a unique level of service to help them build their experiments and systems.
Contracts, Awards and Accolades
Raydiance, Inc. received a Top 10 Tech Award from Automotive Engineering International (AEI) at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 2013 World Congress. Raydiance was selected for its laser machining that delivers precise micro holes for next-gen fuel injectors. The winners were selected from SAE 2013 World Congress exhibitors and judging was based on design and engineering innovation, uniqueness, potential for real-world production application, and potential benefit for industry customers and end users.
