OSA Student Members Gather in Switzerland for IONS-13 Conference on Optics
WASHINGTON, Jan. 8, 2013–The International OSA Network of Students (IONSTM) will host the IONS-13 conference in Zurich and Lausanne, Switzerland Jan. 10-12. The conference, organized by OSA Student Chapters at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) and Lausanne (EPFL), will feature technical sessions and programming for students in the field of optics and photonics. The Optical Society (OSA) will sponsor the event.The IONS-13 scientific program will include a plenary session with accomplished speakers from the international optics community, poster sessions, lab tours, and student “microtalks.” The microtalk format consists of an introductory talk followed by brief research presentations where students are allotted 1-2 minutes and one slide to promote their research. This method will allow the students to practice how to effectively share their knowledge and research goals in an approachable, understandable way. Topics will include ultrafast and nonlinear optics, quantum optics and quantum information processing, bio- and nanophotonics, laser development, photonics applications, and more.
Guest speakers include Jean-luc Doumont of Principiae in Belgium, who will lead a professional development session, and John Tisch, Imperial College London, who will present at the plenary session. Both speakers appear as part of OSA’s Traveling Lecturer Program. Philip Russell of Germany’s Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, OSA’s 2013 Vice President, will also give a plenary session talk.
IONS-13 brings together emerging student leaders in varying optics research fields to facilitate discussion and provide networking opportunities. Students can learn about research outside of their field and gain experience communicating their research to peers who may not be familiar with their area of focus. Social activities include a walking tour of Zurich, a visit to a chocolate factory and a day trip to the Swiss Alps. Additional information on the program is available on the IONS website.
Since its inception in 2006 at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), 29 IONS conferences have been held all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The meetings are independently managed by OSA Student Chapters and are designed to give young scientists a way to connect and collaborate with the global optics and photonics community. OSA supports IONS events through guest lecturer funding, travel grants, administrative and marketing support, and event funding. More information is available on the IONS website.
