OSA Senior Engineering & Applications Advisor Tom Hausken to Address Global State of Photonics at Photonics North 2013


Tom HauskenWASHINGTON, May 31, 2013—Tom Hausken, senior engineering and applications advisor at the Optical Society (OSA), will deliver keynote remarks at Photonics North 2013, taking place June 3-5 in Ottawa, Canada. In his presentation, Hausken will summarize the market for photonics in North America and worldwide, present projections for 2013 and 2014, and provide updates on the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association’s (OIDA) advocacy activities and the U.S. National Photonics Initiative (NPI).  The NPI was launched last week as an inter-society effort to improve support for photonics in the U.S., following the recent National Academies’ report on the topic.

Hausken’s talk will cover several sectors of the photonics market, including optoelectronics, lasers, LEDs, displays, solar cells, passive optics, imagers, sensors, and more. Hausken joins other plenary session speakers Roel Baets, professor at Ghent University, Belgium, and researcher at IMEC; and E. Fred Schubert, professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
 
“In many ways, the North American photonics industry is in a better position than corresponding industries in Europe and Asia—but this position is not assured,” said Hausken. “Industry endeavors such as the NPI, as well as OIDA’s own advocacy efforts are aimed at creating an industry roadmap and winning support for specific programs over the longer term.”
 
With more than 30 years in optoelectronics, Hausken focuses on industry activities at OSA, including OIDA (a trade association affiliated with OSA), where he held a position earlier in his career. For 13 years until 2012,Hausken led market research and strategy consulting for lasers, image sensors, and a range of other photonic products at Strategies Unlimited. He was also a telecom policy analyst at the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, and held R&D and production positions at Alcatel and Texas Instruments in photonics and electronics. He holds a Ph.D. in optoelectronics from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
