OSA Foundation Announces First Siegman International School on Lasers
WASHINGTON, Oct. 31, 2013—The OSA Foundation announced today that Stanford University will host the first Siegman International School on Lasers in the summer of 2014. The program, co-founded by The OSA Foundation and IPG Photonics, will provide 100 graduate students from around the world the opportunity to advance their education, foster future collaboration, and promote research and engineering for the optical community.Founded in honor of Anthony “Tony” Siegman, past president of The Optical Society (OSA) and founding member of The OSA Foundation, the school will take place in a different region of the world every year, bringing world-class education to students who may not have had access to such resources otherwise. The school will provide an opportunity for students to present their own research to their peers, learn from an international group of accomplished speakers, and network with other students in the field of optics.
"Tony made important contributions to lasers, but also to the career paths of fellow scientists and engineers, said Robert Byer, co-director of the Stanford Photonics Research Center. “For the former he is well known, for the latter he is remembered.”
Siegman received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1957 and was a professor on Stanford University's Electrical Engineering faculty for more than 40 years. “Tony spent his entire professional career at Stanford University, so to have the inaugural class of the Siegman International School on Lasers hosted there is a fitting tribute,” said Michael Morris, OSA Foundation board chair. “This school offers a unique opportunity for the brightest graduate students from around the world to come together and learn from internationally-recognized leaders in laser science. Tony supported OSA’s summer school concept from the beginning and we’re proud to launch the first school next year as a way to honor Tony’s legacy for many years to come.”
