OSA-CIOMP International Summer Session to Focus on Optical Engineering

Second summer session to be held in Changchun, China Aug. 4 – 9

WHAT: International Summer Session on Optical Engineering, Design and Manufacturing, hosted by the Optical Society (OSA) and the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics, and Physics (CIOMP)

WHEN: Sunday, Aug. 4 – Friday, Aug. 9

WHERE: CIOMP Campus, Changchun, China

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS:
The bi-annual OSA-CIOMP summer session will provide an opportunity for 100 graduate students from 10 countries to further their education in the field of optics and photonics by interacting with world-renowned instructors, local scientists in China and fellow students. Participants will also be able to present their research and receive feedback from those in the field of optical engineering. Sessions will include lectures, technical presentations, a student poster session and ample time for networking among participants.

Featured lecturers include:
  • Pierre Chavel, Inst. d'Optique Lab Fabry, France
Topic: The Relevance of Diffraction Concepts in the Analysis of Optical System Performance

  • G.W. Forbes, QED Technologies Inc., Australia
    Topic: Working with Non-Spherical Optics

  • Juan C. Miñano, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain
Topic: Introduction to Nonimaging Optics and Nonimaging Design Techniques Review

  • Jie Qiao, Aktiwave LLC, USA
Topic: Technical Marketing for High-Technology Products and Innovations

  • Jannick P. Rolland, University of Rochester, USA (OSA Board Member)
Topic: Moving Away from Symmetry - Aberration Fields and Freeform Optics

  • Kevin P. Thompson, Synopsys, Inc., USA
Topic: Moving Away from Symmetry - Application of Nodal Aberration Theory (NAT) to Mirror Systems

  • James C. Wyant, University of Arizona, USA (2010 OSA President)
Topic: Optical Testing and Testing Instrumentation
Local Chinese scientists participating in the event include:
  • Yongtian Wang, Beijing Institute of Technology, China
Topic: Freeform Optical System Design and Applications

  • Xuejun Zhang, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, China
Topic: Design, Fabricating and Testing Freeform Surfaces for Space Optics
CIOMP is known as “The Cradle of China’s Optics” due to its many contributions to optical research and engineering in China, as well as its impact on science and technology development, economic construction and social progress. CIOMP has established extensive scientific collaborations and long-term exchange programs with more than 30 countries, as well as partnership with several international organizations, including OSA.
