Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition Winners Announced

WASHINGTON, May 9 - The OSA Foundation (OSAF), HRL Laboratories LLC, the IEEE Photonics Society and the APS Division of Laser Science are pleased to announce Jeffrey Driscoll of Columbia University, USA as the winner of the annual Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition. Driscoll won for his paper “First Demonstration of Quasi-Phase-Matched Four-Wave-Mixing in Silicon Waveguides.”The grand prize and two honorable mentions were presented yesterday during the Plenary and Awards Ceremony of the Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics (CLEO: 2012) at the San Jose Convention Center.

Driscoll was one of three finalists selected from more than 890 submissions. All submissions were reviewed and scored by the CLEO: 2012 technical program committee, who selected 35 semi-finalists. Three finalists were selected by the CLEO: 2012 program and general co-chairs and presented their research in a private session on Monday, May 7. The presentations were judged based on innovation, research excellence and presentation ability.

Honorable mentions went to:

  • Chien-Yao Lu University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
    Paper: Metal-Cavity Quantum-Dot Surface-Emitting Microlaser

  • Jun Ong, University of California San Diego, USA
    Paper: Heralded Single Photons from a Silicon Nanophotonic Chip

Driscoll will receive $3,000. Lu and Ong will each receive a certificate.

The Maiman Student Paper Competition honors American physicist Theodore Maiman for his amazing invention, the first working laser, and his other outstanding contributions to optics and photonics. It recognizes student innovation and research excellence in the areas of laser technology and electro-optics. The award is endowed by a grant from HRL Laboratories LLC, the IEEE Photonics Society and the APS Division of Laser Science and is administered by OSAF.

Seeing the Forest Through the Trees with a New LiDAR System

Moisture-Responsive ‘Robots’ Crawl with No External Power Source

Using an off-the-shelf camera flash, researchers turned an ordinary sheet of graphene oxide into a material that bends when exposed to moisture. They then used this material to make a spider-like crawler and claw robot that move in response to changing humidity without the need for any external power.
