From making networks faster, to ensuring our food is safe, and even enabling novel medical procedures, OSA Corporate Associates started 2012 off at 400G speeds. If the first quarter is any indication, 2012 is sure to see a wide variety of exciting optics and photonics industry innovations.
Focus on Applications
An African Elephant at the North Carolina Zoo can see a little clearer now thanks in part to Bioptigen Inc.’s Envisu R2300 opthalmic imaging system. Veterinarians there used the hand-held device to perform cataract surgery on the elephant. This was only the fifth time such a procedure has been performed on an elephant, and the first time a spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) imaging system was used on an elephant. The Envisu R2300 allowed veterinarians to visualize the cornea, the cataract and the capsular bag prior to surgery.
Network specialist Ciena Corporation is working to improve network capacities across the globe. The company unveiled their new WaveLogic 3 technology at the 2012 Optical Fiber Communications /National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC). WaveLogic 3 is a soft-ware programmable coherent technology that scales to 400 Gb/s. The technology will be deployed in the second half of 2012, and has the capacity to carry live Skype video chats from every household in San Francisco to Tokyo on a single chip-set simultaneously.
Business Partnerships and Agreements
New York based Corning Incorporated has partnered with Samsung Mobile Display Co., Ltd. to establish a new equity venture to manufacture specialty glass substrates for organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices. The project will combine Corning’s Lotus Glass substrate technology with Samsung Mobile Display’s OLED expertise to produce screens for a range of products including mobile phones, televisions and handheld gaming devices. The new business will be located in Korea.
Agilent Technologies entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop new tools to screen for salmonella in food and to improve existing tools for confirming that seafood is correctly labeled. The first part of the project will use mass spectrometry-based genotyping to quickly identify salmonella subtypes. This can help officials identify the source of an outbreak quickly. The second part of the agreement, carried out with the FDA and the Campden BRI Laboratory in the U.K., will update Agilent’s lab-on-a-chip method of DNA analysis to identify fish-species. This can help identify intentional mislabeling to avoid tariffs and import restrictions or commit economic fraud.
Contracts, Awards and Accolades
German airline Lufthansa has contracted Goodrich Corporation to retrofit a portion of its fleet with LED runway turnoff (RTO) lights. The lights, which offer better illumination and reduced operating costs, will be integrated in the nose landing gear of Lufthansa’s A320 Family aircrafts. The work will be done at Goodrich’s Lighting Systems facility in Lippstadt, Germany, and can be completed in under 15 minutes thanks to the product’s plug and play design.
In March, INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine named two JDSU products as a Unified Communications (UC) 2011 Product of the Year. The JDSU TrueSpeed Automated Test solution and the JDSU QT-600-10 probe won for their ability to enable high quality advanced mobile, LTE/4G and mobile backhaul services. The award recognizes companies that brought ground-breaking advancements to UC technologies in the past year.
BTI Solutions has been contracted by service provider Frontier Communications Corporation to enhance their delivery platform. Frontier Communications will use BTI’s application-aware product suite to accommodate growth in high bandwidth demand services such as video streaming. Video accounts for half of Frontier’s traffic and the BTI suite enables them to ease network congestion and deliver up to 24 percent in bandwidth savings.
