Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition Finalists Announced
WASHINGTON, April 28 – The OSA Foundation, HRL Laboratories LLC, the IEEE Photonics Society and the APS Division of Laser Science today announced the three finalists for the annual Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition. The finalists were selected from more than 850 paper submissions. The winner of the competition will be announced during this year’s Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics (CLEO: 2011) to be held May 1 – 6 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
The following students were named as finalists:

Paper: Vibrational Photoacoustic Microscopy for Depth-resolved Bond-selective Imaging of Tissues and Organisms -
Gabriel Ycas, University of Colorado at Boulder – Physics, United States
Paper: Calibration of an Astronomical Spectrograph using a 25 GHz Laser Frequency Comb
All submissions were reviewed and scored by the CLEO: 2011 technical program committee. The conference general and program chairs selected the finalists and will view their presentations in a private session on Monday, May 2. The finalists will be judged based on innovation, research excellence and presentation ability. One grand prize winner and two honorable mentions will be announced on-site during the OSA Foundation Luncheon, Tuesday, May 3.
The Maiman Student Paper Competition honors American physicist Theodore Maiman for his demonstration of the first working laser, and his other outstanding contributions to optics and photonics. It recognizes student innovation and research excellence in the areas of laser technology and electro-optics. The award is endowed by a grant from HRL Laboratories LLC, the IEEE Photonics Society and the APS Division of Laser Science and is administered by the OSA Foundation.
