Students Awarded Newport Travel Grants for CLEO: 2011

WASHINGTON, April 28 – The OSA Foundation and Newport Corporation are pleased to announce the winners of the first Newport Travel Grant program. Established by Newport in 2010, this program recognizes the research excellence of students presenting their work at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO: 2011) to be held May 1 – 6 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

The following students were awarded the travel grants:

  • Kamal Hammani, Université de Bourgogne, France
Paper: Emergence of Rogue Waves from Optical Turbulence, Peregrine Soliton in Optical Fiber-based Systems

  • Friederike Junginger, Universität Konstanz, Germany
Paper: Ultrafast Dynamics of Semiconductor Interband Transitions in THz Fields up to 4 MV/cm

  • Joseph Kerckhoff, Stanford University, USA
Paper: Optical ‘Bistability’ with Single Atom Absorbers

  • Klaus F. Reim, University of Oxford, UK
Paper: Single-Photon-Level Memory at Room Temperature

  • Volker J. Sorger, University of California at Berkeley, USA
    Paper: Integrated Hybrid Nanophotonics

“The caliber of the student papers at CLEO is truly impressive, so we are excited to support their accomplishments by establishing this travel grant,” said Gary Spiegel of Newport Corp.  “I look forward to seeing not only their presentations but what they continue to achieve throughout their careers.”

The winners, selected by the CLEO: 2011 program chairs, each received a $1,000 travel grant and will be recognized during the OSA Foundation Luncheon on May 3 at the conference.

About the OSA Foundation
The OSA Foundation (OSAF) was established in 2002 to support philanthropic activities that help further the Optical Society's (OSA) mission by concentrating its efforts on programs that advance youth science education, provide optics and photonics education to underserved populations, provide career and professional development resources and support awards and honors that recognize technical and business excellence. The grants funded by the OSA Foundation are made possible by the generous donations of its supporters as well as the dollar-for-dollar match by OSA. The Foundation is exempt from U.S. federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is a public charity.
