OSA to Host Congressional Briefing on Optics in Medical Imaging

Experts to convene on Capitol Hill to highlight current and future advances in disease diagnosis and treatment

The Optical Society (OSA), in conjunction with the U.S. House of Representatives’ Research and Development Caucus, is hosting a congressional briefing this week on how medical imaging is being used to better diagnose and treat a range of conditions. A panel of experts will discuss current and future technologies related to optical medical imaging and give examples of how laboratory research has translated into successful start-up companies.

Medical imaging helps to detect, diagnose and treat many life-threatening diseases at their earliest stages. According to experts, early detection, diagnosis and treatment reduce the need for invasive, in-patient procedures and repeat surgeries, and facilitate shorter recovery times while also saving money and improving efficiency in the healthcare system. Many of the cutting-edge technologies being developed and used today originated from university laboratories through federal government spending.

About OSA

Uniting more than 130,000 professionals from 175 countries, the Optical Society (OSA) brings together the global optics community through its programs and initiatives. Since 1916 OSA has worked to advance the common interests of the field, providing educational resources to the scientists, engineers and business leaders who work in the field by promoting the science of light and the advanced technologies made possible by optics and photonics. OSA publications, events, technical groups and programs foster optics knowledge and scientific collaboration among all those with an interest in optics and photonics.
