OSA Co-Sponsors Best Poster Awards at Annual NSBP/NSHP Meeting
WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 – Peter Delfyett (University of Central Florida, CREOL) and Anthony Johnson (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) served as Best Poster Presentation judges on behalf of the Optical Society (OSA) and SPIE at the Joint Meeting of the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP), last month in Austin, Texas. Delfyett and Johnson – both OSA Fellows – have been enthusiastic student competition judges for several years.
The following awards, which were funded by OSA and SPIE, were presented at the Saturday evening banquet:
- Undergraduate Poster: First Prize ($400 + OSA student membership) – Maria Paula Angarita, Florida International University, "Photoresponse of the Topological Insulator Bi2Se3: Exploring the Interplay Between Optical, Thermal and Electronic Properties of the Surface State."
- Undergraduate Poster: Second Prize ($200 + OSA student membership) – Ken Wilson, Bloomfield College, "Understanding the Activity and Structure of Gold Nanoparticle-Glucose Oxidase Conjugates: Towards the Development of Functional Gold Nanoparticle-Protein Conjugates."
- Graduate Poster: First Prize ($400 + SPIE student membership) – Joseph Young, Rice University, "Synthesis and Characterization of Au2S/Au Core/Shell Nanostructures."
- Graduate Poster: Second Prize ($200 + SPIE student membership) – Leslie Upton, University of Michigan, "Entangled Photon Fluorescence with Organic Conjugated Dendrimers."
OSA has been a long standing supporter of the annual NSBP/NSHP Conference, which this year had 530 total registrants – 238 of whom where students. OSA held an exhibit booth where students could talk to representatives to learn more about optics and OSA. The poster presentations were highly competitive and OSA extends its congratulations to this year’s winners.
About the NSBP/NSHP Conference
The 2011 Joint Annual Conference of NSBP and NSHP was held September 21-24, 2011 at the Renaissance Austin Hotel, Texas. With over 500 participants, this meeting is the largest gathering of African-American and Hispanic physicists in the world. Student attendees presented posters or oral presentations, attended professional development sessions, scientific sessions; and networked with fellow students and with faculty. The conference includes one of the largest and most successful physics career fairs in the U.S. The sponsors include the National Science Foundation, the University of Texas at Austin and the Southeastern University Research Association.
