OSA Student Members to Gather in Salamanca, Spain for IONS-9 Conference

WASHINGTON, March 29–The International OSA Network of Students (IONS) will host IONS-9 in Salamanca, Spain, April 7-8 at the Universidad de Salamanca (USAL). IONS-9 features technical and professional development programming for students in the field of optics and photonics and is being organized by students from the OSA Student Chapter at USAL. The Optical Society (OSA) is a co-sponsor of the event.

Highlights of IONS-9 include:

  • Plenary Session Keynote Speakers:
    • Christopher Dainty
      National University of Ireland, Galway
      2011 OSA President
Topic: "Adaptive Optics and Vision Science"
    • Alexander Gaeta
      Cornell University
      OSA Board of Directors
      Topic: "Ultrafast All-Optical Processing on a Silicon-Chip"
    • Ken Ledingham
      Strathclyde University
Topic: "Ultra-High-Intensity Laser Interactions - Brighter than a Million Suns"
    • Luis Roso
El Centro de Láseres Pulsados Ultracortos Ultraintensos
Topic: "Broadband Lasers: The Salamanca Pulsed Laser Center"
  • Scientific sessions featuring student technical talks and poster sessions, as well as an award for the best talk and poster presented
  • Special activities such as a lab tour of Spain’s most powerful laser, student chapter activities and a social day in Salamanca, Unesco World Heritage Site

IONS was first created in 2006 during OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), by several OSA student chapters that wanted a way for young scientists to connect from around the world and actively engage in optics and photonics. All IONS meetings are independently managed by OSA student chapters; 16 IONS meetings have been held around the world since 2006.

"The student members who devote countless hours to the success of the IONS events are emerging as leaders in the field of optics and photonics," said Christopher Dainty, 2011 OSA President. "It is through their great dedication and efforts that their peers are able to further develop their research and ability to collaborate with their colleagues on an international scale. OSA is honored to be a sponsor of IONS-9 and looks forward to continuing to support these events in the future."

IONS meetings occur every year in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australasia. In 2010, meetings were held in Moscow; Recife, Brazil; Tucson, Ariz., USA; and Dunedin, New Zealand. More information about IONS-9 and other IONS events is available at http://ions-project.org.
