Just as the summer months are heating up, so are the OSA Corporate Members. The second quarter of 2011 has been awards season for many of these members and based on the high quality of research and beneficial agreements being established, the momentum of the year is certain to last.
Focus on Applications
SCHOTT North America has developed a flexible beam shaper that can be used to form a “square” laser diode light into a homogeneous beam of light of any desired shape. The flexible beam shaper also emits a high laser beam quality and will assist with new applications in industrial and medical fields.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) Lincoln Lab have developed a new radar system that looks through walls. This ultrawideband (UWB) multiple-input, multiple-output phased-array sensor has real-time acquisition and processing capability and provides video-like synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of people moving behind a concrete wall. The technology will be useful for providing soldiers or emergency responders in urban environments with increased awareness of activity inside or behind structures.
Business Partnerships and Agreements
Goodrich has been selected by Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) to work on the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Integrated Vehicle Energy Technology program (INVENT). Goodrich will design, develop, and test an integrated suite of advanced actuators featuring technologies focused on improving energy, power, and thermal management. These new technologies will target the next generation of tactical fighters and air mobility transport systems.
Ciena has been selected by SURFnet to enhance their optical network, including support for full photonic flexibility and the deployment of 100 Gbps on international links connecting the Netherlands to research communities like CERN in Switzerland.
Contracts, Awards and Accolades
Energetiq Technology, Inc. has been named a winner of an R&D 100 Award by R&D Magazine for its revolutionary laser-driven light source technology. The EQ-99 LDLS™ Laser-Driven Light Source was hailed as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have been a benchmark of excellence for a wide range of industry sectors. Many of these award-winning products have become household names, helping shape everyday life for millions of people.
MIT Lincoln Lab was also named a winner of five R&D 100 Awards.
The University of Arizona's College of Optical Sciences has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy to polish the 4.2-meter primary mirror for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST). When operational in Hawaii, the ATST will become the world's largest solar telescope. This glass mirror will serve as the primary focusing element to create high-resolution images of the fine scale structure of the sun.
Malvern Instruments has been awarded the United Kingdom’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise for two successive years. Details of the 2011 awards were announced on April 21, with Malvern receiving the award in the category of International Trade. This is the seventh time that Malvern Instruments has been recognized in the Queen’s Awards.
Tabula Inc. has been awarded the Red Herring Top 100 North America Technology Award. The Red Herring Top 100 award recognizes the year's most promising private technology companies from the North American Business region based on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, management quality, strategy, and market penetration.
