Vyas Akondi Receives Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grant

WASHINGTON, July 28 – The OSA Foundation (OSAF)  is pleased to announce Vyas  Akondi  of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, India, as the recipient of the 2011 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Student Travel Grant for the Imaging and Applied Optics: OSA Optics and Photonics Congress. The grant was started by Optical Research Associates (ORA®), now the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys, as a memorial to ORA's former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert. The grant recognizes the research excellence of graduate students in the areas of optical engineering, lens design, and/or illumination design.

Akondi presented two papers, "Evaluation of the performance of centroiding algorithms with varying spot size: case of WFS calibration for the TMT NFIRAOS" and "Multi-dither Shack Hartmann sensor for large telescopes: A numerical performance evaluation", at Adaptive Optics: Methods, Analysis and Applications (AO) which took place July 10 – 14 in Toronto, Canada. Akondi was formally recognized during a lunch held on July 12.

"Bob Hilbert had a longstanding commitment to fostering technical innovation in optics and supporting optics education," said George Bayz, vice president and general manager of the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys. "We are pleased to honor his memory with this grant program and congratulate Vyas Akondi on his contributions to the Adaptive Optics conference."

The Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grants are awarded to students presenting at the International Optical Design Conference (IODC), the Optical Society's Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), and selected other OSA topical meetings. The 2011 recipient was selected by the program chairs of Computational Optical Sensing and Imaging (COSI) and AO.

The application deadline for the Robert S. Hilbert Travel Grants to be presented at the 2011 Frontiers in Optics conference is August 5.  For more information on this grant and other OSA Foundation grants please visit the OSAF website.

About the OSA Foundation
The OSA Foundation (OSAF) was established in 2002 to support philanthropic activities that help further the Optical Society's (OSA) mission by concentrating its efforts on programs that advance youth science education, provide optics and photonics education to underserved populations, provide career and professional development resources and support awards and honors that recognize technical and business excellence. The grants funded by the OSA Foundation are made possible by the generous donations of its supporters as well as the dollar-for-dollar match by OSA. The Foundation is exempt from U.S. federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is a public charity.
