The Optical Society Remains Top Publisher of Peer-Reviewed Optics and Photonics Content

OSA journals are most highly cited in Thomson Reuters 2009 Journal Citation Reports optics category

WASHINGTON, June 23—The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce its 14 flagship, partnered and co-published peer-reviewed journals continue to provide the most citations and articles in the field of optics and photonics, according to the recently released Thomson Reuters 2009 Journal Citation Reports® (JCR). Combined, OSA’s journals make up nearly 40% of the total citations received in 2009 and 35% of all articles published in the JCR’s optics category—both more than any other publisher in this category. The JCR is considered the industry standard for peer-reviewed journal rankings and offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals based on citation data.

OSA’s journals received a total of 132,377 citations in 2009 and published nearly 7,000 peer-reviewed articles. Of the 70 journals listed in the optics category, eight OSA published or co-published journals (Optics Express, Optics Letters, Journal of Lightwave Technology, Journal of the Optical Society of America B, Journal of Display Technology, Journal of the Optical Society of America A, Journal of Optical Networking, and Applied Optics) appear within the top 24 journals based on impact factor. Half of the articles in this segment are from these eight publications. Optics Express, OSA’s award-winning open-access journal, continues as the society’s top-ranked journal with an impact factor of 3.278, ranking number three in the field. Additionally, Applied Optics and Journal of the Optical Society of America A have maintained their cited half-life of more than 10 years, demonstrating that OSA’s content endures as a valued resource for the optics and photonics community.

The JCR also includes each journal’s Eigenfactor™ Score. This year, OSA’s Optics Express, Optics Letters and Applied Optics represent three of the top four journals in the optics category based on Eigenfactor. The Eigenfactor Score calculation is based on the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year while also considering which journals have contributed these citations; as such, highly cited journals will influence the network more than lesser cited journals. References from one article in a journal to another article from the same journal are removed, so that Eigenfactor Scores are not influenced by journal self-citation.
