LaserFest Announces Laser Graffiti Video Contest Winners
OSA Student Chapters from around the world showcase the science of lasers on YouTube
WASHINGTON, June 16—The Optical Society (OSA) today announced the winners of the LaserFest Laser Graffiti Video Contest. OSA Student Chapters from universities around the world entered the contest as part of LaserFest, the scientific community’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the demonstration of the first working laser. The contest called for student chapters to produce videos that highlighted the science and technology of lasers while using laser “graffiti”—laser images projected on the side of a wall or building. The videos were posted on YouTube and entered in two categories: Technical Merit and People’s Choice.

All videos were judged on technical merit and were required to include an instructional segment about the science and technology of lasers. People’s Choice winners and runners-up were based solely on the number of views the videos received on YouTube as of April 30, 2010. Ten Student Chapters from eight countries entered the contest. Each winner and runner-up will receive cash prizes for their student chapters. Links to all 10 video entries are available on the LaserFest website. The contest took place as a part of Laser Days, a LaserFest initiative designed to engage students, teachers, families, industry and community groups at the grassroots level. The events encourage students to explore the enjoyment of science through a series of programs held at schools, universities, science centers, corporations, libraries and planetariums.
