Register and Attend CLEO/QELS - the Premier
International Laser and Electro-Optics Event

With Applications-Focused Programming and 1,800 Technical Presentations,
CLEO/QELS is the Industry’s Most Influential Technical and Market Forum

What: Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) / Quantum Electronics Laser Science Conference (QELS)

When/Where: May 16 - 21, 2010 (Exhibits open May 18-20) at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center

Details: CLEO/QELS is the premiere destination for a global audience of professionals who seek the latest information on laser science and photonics applications. Attendees gather from around the world to hear from the foremost authorities. In addition to the plenary sessions, invited speakers, contributed paper presentations, and short courses, CLEO also covers emerging applications of lasers and electro-optical technology.

Featuring:

  • 250 laser and electro-optics exhibitors (25 percent based outside the U.S.)
  • Comprehensive technical program features the most important technical developments in hot topic areas like biophotonics, semiconductor lasers, energy-efficient photonics, nanophotonic devices, ultrafast optics and more.

Highlights: Applications and Technical Programming:

Visit the CLEO/QELS website periodically for regular programming updates. In the meantime, here's a preview of what to expect:

  • CLEO: Applications - The revamped CLEO: Applications program (formerly PhAST) focuses on the demonstration of components, systems, and emerging applications of lasers and electro-optical technology. The new program runs from Monday, May 17, to Friday, May 21 on the same schedule as the CLEO Technical programs.
  • Market Focus - Part of the CLEO: Applications program, Market Focus sessions cover business and commercialized applications and are held on the exhibit floor. Industry experts will be featured on a series of panels covering the areas of Photonics for Energy, Industrial Lasers, Photonics for Defense and Security, and Biophotonics.
  • Technology Transfer Showcase - The CLEO Technology Transfer Program offers attendees from industry a “one-stop” opportunity to learn about the latest optics and photonics technologies coming out of universities and government labs.
  • LaserFest Symposium – Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Laser - On May 16 - the actual date of the 50th anniversary of Theodore Maiman’s demonstration of the first working laser at Hughes Research Labs—Nobel laureates and early pioneers of the laser will offer retrospectives on the invention of the laser.  Nobel Laureates Nico Bloembergen and Charles Townes will speak, along with Ted Maiman’s wife, Kathleen, and National Ignition Facility Director Ed Moses, among others.
  • Join these industry leaders for a unique perspective into today’s lasers and electro-optics field. The CLEO/QELS Plenary Sessions, scheduled for Monday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 19, feature:

    • Gérard Mourou, École Polytechnique, France
"New Physics at Extreme Intensities of Light"
    • Douglas Simons, Gemini Observatory, USA
"A New Portal on the Universe-Laser Adaptive Optics"
    • Steven Block, Stanford University, USA
"Single Molecule Biophysics with Optical Tweezers"
    • David Awschalom, University of California at Santa Barbara, USA
"Manipulating Single Spins and Coherence in Semiconductors"

  • Hundreds of educational workshops and tutorial sessions.

Private media events will include:

  • What’s Next – A Look at Future Applications of the Laser - a press-only lunch panel at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18. CLEO/QELS representatives and participating panelists from the scientific, corporate and analyst communities will provide a high-level view of the industry and innovation.
