International Optics Students to Gather in New Zealand
for IONS-KOALA 2010

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 – The University of Otago OSA Student Chapter will be hosting an International OSA Network of Students (IONS) Conference and the 3rd annual Conference on Optics, Atoms and Laser Applications (IONS-KOALA) in Dunedin, New Zealand, from Nov. 29 – Dec. 3. IONS-KOALA will feature technical and professional development programming for students in the field of optics and photonics. The Optical Society (OSA) is a co-sponsor of the event, which will welcome more than 80 young scientists from around the world.

Highlights of IONS-KOALA 2010 include:

  • Scientific sessions featuring keynote speaker Charles Clark, Fellow at the U.S. National Institute of Standards & Technology. The scientific session will also include student technical talks and poster sessions as well as an award for the best presentation.
  • Lab tours, networking and social events, and excursions to the Catlins and other New Zealand landmarks.

IONS was first created in 2006 during OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), by several OSA student chapters that wanted to bring together young scientists from around the world and facilitate active discussions about their research in optics and photonics. All IONS meetings are independently managed by OSA student chapters. Thus far, 15 IONS meetings have been held around the world since 2006.

“The organizers of IONS-KOALA are continuing a strong tradition of robust student-oriented technical and professional programming,” said OSA President James C. Wyant. “OSA is proud to be a sponsor of IONS-KOALA 2010 and looks forward to continuing to support these events.”

IONS meetings take place each year in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Australasia. In 2010, four other IONS meetings were held in the United States, Russia, Brazil and Ireland. More information about IONS-KOALA 2010 and other IONS events are available at http://ions-project.org.
