First Quarter 2010 Industry News Summary

The arrival of 2010 has brought with it a feeling of revival in the optics and photonics industry. With news of innovative products at OFC/NFOEC, new business contracts in the solar energy sector and orders for products exceeding tens of millions of dollars, the future is looking bright.

Focus on Applications

Emcore Corp. has been awarded a contract by ATK Space Systems of Goleta, Calif. to manufacture, test, and deliver solar panels for ATK's UltraFlex™ solar arrays. These solar arrays will be used to power the Orion spacecraft being developed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company for NASA. The period of performance for this contract for the first two vehicles runs through 2013 and is valued in the range of $9-$11 million. The flight solar array system is expendable for each Orion mission and continuous production is expected to run through 2020 and beyond.

At last month’s OFC/NFOEC Opnext performed the world's first live demonstration of a real-time 100Gbps DWDM solution based upon a single wavelength coherent receiver supporting forward error correction code with 20 percent overhead.

Corning Inc.’s Gorilla® glass has been designed into the LG X300, a newly released premium mobile PC. This lightweight device packs portable computing technology into an ultra-slim form. It measures just 17.5 millimeters (mm) thick and weighs roughly 2 pounds, giving users convenient portability. Corning’s Gorilla glass enables the unique edge-to-edge cover design and allows the device to remain thin and lightweight.

Vytran has coherently combined two, three, and four fiber lasers to produce more than 100 watts of single transverse mode output at approximately 1 micron from an all-fiber, all-passive configuration. These results conclude a two-year Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base (Albuquerque, N.M.).

Business Partnerships and Agreements

Coherent Inc. has secured multiple orders totaling in excess of $20M from crystalline silicon solar cell manufacturers for laser-based process tools – just three months after releasing the Coherent EquinoxTM and AethonTM products. Comprising some of the largest orders for laser-based tooling to date within the solar industry, deliveries are scheduled for completion in the first half of calendar 2010.

IMRA America Inc. and Jenoptik have concluded a license agreement for IMRA high power fiber technology for products built by Jenoptik for government applications including defense and security applications. In the agreement, IMRA licenses Jenoptik a portfolio of IMRA patents related to fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Awards and Accolades

ASML Optics LLC has been recognized as one of 16 suppliers to receive Intel Corporation’s Preferred Quality Supplier (PQS) award for their performance in 2009. ASML is recognized for their significant contributions, providing Intel with lithography process tools, deemed essential to Intel’s success.

Optimax recently awarded two University Research Grants to applicants from CREOL at the University of Central Florida and the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. This year’s grants went to Dr. Ayman Abouraddy of CREOL for his work using three prisms which were designed to invert an image in a Mach-Zender Interferometer and Professor Tom Milster of the University of Arizona for his research using solid immersion lithography to develop an NA=2.0 microscope objective lens.
