OSA and SPIE honor Wang and Wu with 2010 Goodman Book Writing Award

WASHINGTON, March 11 — Lihong V. Wang and Hsin-I Wu are recipients of the 2010 Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for their book Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging, the Optical Society (OSA) and SPIE announced this week.

The Goodman Award, a biennial award funded by a personal gift from Joseph W. and Hon Mai Goodman, recognizes a recent and outstanding book in the field of optics and photonics that has contributed significantly to research, teaching, or the optics and photonics industry. This year, the Goodman Book Writing Award will be bestowed upon Wang and Wu at the SPIE Optics and Photonics symposium in August in San Diego.

The joint OSA/SPIE award selection committee cited the book as playing a very important role in the instruction and understanding of biomedical optics, and noted that Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging is proving to be an invaluable resource for researchers in the field and for the next generation of scientists. Published by John Wiley & Sons in 2007, the book has been adopted by courses at top universities around the world.  Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging provides a strong foundation of the basic physics and engineering of imaging techniques such as ballistic imaging (confocal microscopy, two-photon microscopy, and optical coherence tomography), diffusion imaging, photoacoustic tomography, and ultrasound-aided hybrid imaging.

The selection committee reviewed a number of nominations, taking into account the topics being considered, the logical sequence of these topics, the clarity of presentation and the impact the book has had on research, teaching, or the optics business. In particular, the awards panel noted such measures of impact as numbers of citations, the degree of adoption for coursework, and number of copies sold, as well as other factors at its discretion.

Biomedical Optics: Principles and Imaging is a good example of how knowledge can be gained through the coupling of information with numerical examples in the body of chapters and homework problems,” said Orazio Svelto, chair of the selection committee. “The clarity and quality of work that Wang and Wu were able to convey ensures that this book is not only deserving of the Goodman Award but it also deserves its place as an important guide to introductory biomedical optics.”

To be eligible for the award, books must meet several requirements. By the terms of the Goodman award, books to be considered should have been recently published, and should be “authored” technical books rather than edited compilations, handbooks, reviews, or popular science books. Additionally, nominated books must currently be in print, readily available from the publisher and suppliers and must be available in English.

About OSA
Uniting more than 106,000 professionals from 134 countries, the Optical Society (OSA) brings together the global optics community through its programs and initiatives. Since 1916 OSA has worked to advance the common interests of the field, providing educational resources to the scientists, engineers and business leaders who work in the field by promoting the science of light and the advanced technologies made possible by optics and photonics. OSA publications, events, technical groups and programs foster optics knowledge and scientific collaboration among all those with an interest in optics and photonics. For more information, visit www.osa.org.

About SPIE
SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 188,000 constituents from 138 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organizes and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific, and supports scholarships, grants, and other education programs around the world.
