OSA Foundation Awards Harvey M. Pollicove Memorial Scholarship to University of Arizona Graduate Student Katie Schwertz
WASHINGTON, Jan. 25—The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is pleased to announce Katie Schwertz as the winner of the 2009 Harvey M. Pollicove Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, which honors optics manufacturing pioneer Harvey Pollicove, is given to an outstanding student pursuing a degree in the field of precision optics manufacturing. Schwertz is currently working toward a master’s degree in optical sciences at the University of Arizona’s College of Optical Sciences.
“Katie’s passion for optics shines through in the research she is conducting at the University of Arizona,” said Donald Golini, member of the H.M. Pollicove Memorial Scholarship Advisory Committee. “She has a real interest in applying her knowledge and expertise in optics in a way that will benefit the optics manufacturing field as a whole. The committee is delighted to award Katie the Pollicove Scholarship for her outstanding efforts.”
The H.M. Pollicove Memorial Fund was established in 2005 through contributions from Harvey Pollicove’s friends and colleagues to recognize his work in the field of precision optics manufacturing. The OSA Foundation partnered with the fund to establish the scholarship in 2008. The $4,000 annual award rotates among participating academic institutions, which include the University of Arizona, the University of Central Florida and the University of Rochester. The H.M. Pollicove Memorial Scholarship Advisory Committee reviews scholarship applications and provides input to the host academic institution. The host academic institution makes the final selection of the scholarship winner and the OSA Foundation distributes the award.
“Now in its second year, the Pollicove Scholarship again received many exceptional student applications,” said G. Michael Morris, chair of the OSA Foundation. “We are very pleased and impressed to see the next generation of optical scientists excelling in their field.”
