OFC/NFOEC 2009 Announces Plenary Session Speakers

High-level speakers include Philippe Morin, Lawrence Lessig, Shri Kuldeep Goyal

The 2009 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) – the premier international optical communication event – will feature three industry leaders in the fields of optics and telecommunications. The speakers are scheduled to give the keynote addresses at the OFC/NFOEC plenary session, which draws the largest audience at the conference. Their talks will provide important insights into the state of the optical communication industry, information on the latest in cutting-edge technology, assessments and analyses of industry trends and a unique international perspective of the future of optical fiber communication.

WHAT:
Leaders in the optical communication industry are confirmed as plenary speakers for OFC/NFOEC.
WHO:
Plenary speakers are:

Philippe Morin
President, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel, Canada – “The Changing Landscape in Optical Communications”

Nortel's Metro Ethernet Networks business is focused on leveraging the company’s leadership in optical and carrier data to drive market share in super-fast Ethernet networks. These next-generation transport networks will be essential for supporting the explosion of network traffic fuelled by new consumer trends and business applications, including bandwidth-hungry applications such as video.

Lawrence Lessig
Professor, Stanford Law School, USA – “Getting the Network the World Needs”

One of America’s most original and influential public intellectuals, Lawrence Lessig is the foremost expert on intellectual property in the age of digital communication. He focuses on the social dimension of creativity: how creative work builds on the past and how society encourages or inhibits that building with laws and technologies.

Shri Kuldeep Goyal
Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), India –

“The Growth of Fiber Networks in India”
At 55,000 km of installed fiber, BSNL’s network is the largest in the world and is growing at a rate of 50 percent per year. Goyal will review BSNL’s plans to provide FTTH throughout India and will also discuss anticipated broadband service offerings. Goyal took over as chairman and managing director of BSNL on Aug. 1, 2007.

About OFC/NFOEC
Since 1985, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) has provided an annual backdrop for the optical communications field to network and share research and innovations. In 2004, OFC joined forces with the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) creating the largest and most comprehensive international event for optical communications. By combining an exposition of more than 600 companies, with a unique program of peer-reviewed technical programming and special focused educational sessions, OFC/NFOEC provides an unparalleled opportunity reaching every audience from service providers to optical equipment manufacturers and beyond.

OFC/NFOEC, www.ofcnfoec.org, is managed by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and co-sponsored by OSA, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Communications Society (IEEE/ComSoc) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (IEEE/LEOS). Acting as a non-financial technical co-sponsor is Telcordia Technologies, Inc.
