CLEO®/Europe-EQEC 2009 Highlights Excellence in Lasers and Electro-Optics
2009 conference to take place June 14 – 19 in Munich, Germany
MUNICH, April 23—The European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the XIth European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO®/Europe-EQEC) will take place as part of the World of Photonics Congress June 14 - 19 in Munich, Germany. CLEO/Europe-EQEC has now finalized its quality technical program of invited and keynote speakers and a range of carefully selected contributed papers from more than 1,500 submissions. The program of accepted papers is now available on the CLEO/Europe Web site. Post-deadline papers are still being accepted through May 11.
The CLEO/Europe-EQEC Plenary Sessions, being held June 15 and 16, will feature two internationally-recognized pioneers in optics and photonics. At Monday’s session, Professor Erich Ippen from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, will survey the field of ultrafast optics and its many applications. On Tuesday, Professor Serge Haroche from the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, France, will discuss novel results exploring the quantum nature of light.
The Tuesday Plenary Session will also include an Awards Ceremony, which will feature the winners of the European Physical Society Quantum Electronics Prizes, Fresnel Prizes and Ph.D. thesis prizes, as well as a ceremony recognizing newly elected Fellows of the Optical Society (OSA). It will also include a brief memorial to the memory of the Russian laser and photonics pioneer Vladilen Stepanovich Letokhov, a former Quantum Electronics Prize winner who passed away in March.
Following the Tuesday Plenary Session will be the presentation of the inaugural Herbert Walther Award, established in 2007 by OSA and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. The inaugural Walther Award will be presented to David J. Wineland of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA, for his seminal contributions to quantum information physics and metrology, and the development of trapped ion techniques for applications to basic quantum phenomena, plasma physics and optical clocks. An award address from Wineland will conclude the session.
Other conference highlights include a range of presentations from world experts in their fields, including tutorial talks on femtosecond lasers in materials processing (Eric Mazur, Harvard University), research challenges and applications in nanophotonics (Alfred Forchel, University of Würzburg), the fascination of metamaterials (Allan Boardman, University of Salford) and recent developments in the field of optical cavity quantum electrodynamics (Gerhard Rempe, Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching).
Keynote talks will cover some of these topics in more detail, and will also provide additional coverage of new and emerging areas of research. CLEO/Europe presentations include talks on visible and ultraviolet semiconductor disk lasers (Martin Dawson, University of Strathclyde), femtosecond-laser-written waveguides for communications and biophotonics (Giulio Cerullo, Politecnico di Milano), astrophotonics and observational cosmology (Joss Bland-Hawthorn, University of Sydney), and research into the new horizons of nanoplasmonics (Mark Stockman, Georgia State University). Highlights of EQEC include keynote presentations on superoscillations and optical superresolution (Michael Berry, University of Bristol), metamaterials (Nader Engheta, University of Pennsylvania), plasmonics (Albert Polman, FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, Amsterdam) and quantum information (Han Woerdman, Leiden University).
Special features for 2009 include joint sessions with other conferences within the World of Photonics Congress. Specifically, a series of invited talks surveying hot topics in biophotonics will be held with the European Conference on Biomedical Optics (ECBO), and invited talks surveying advances in fiber laser technology and applications will be held with the WLT Lasers in Manufacturing (LIM) conference. An additional joint session with LIM on Fundamentals and Modelling of Materials Processing with Lasers has also been confirmed.
A unique feature of CLEO/Europe-EQEC will be a series of four short courses to be held on June 14 covering Optical Parametric Oscillators, Plasmonics, Practical Quantum Optics and Optical Amplifiers.
