OFC/NFOEC 2007 Features Outside Plant Activities

FTTx, DWDM, cable management and other applications to be explored

The 2007 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) – the premier international optics communications event – this year offers the Outside Plant (OSP)/Fiber Technology Showcase, designed specifically for OSP professionals. Current FTTx technology is being actively deployed in the consumer market and new FTTx technologies are continually emerging, and this OSP/Fiber Technology Showcase will focus on developments in emerging networks and optoelectronic devices in the field, including the latest DWDM and ROADM technologies.

Details:

The OSP/Fiber Technology Showcase features the newest advancements in FTTx,
DWDM, Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) and Chromatic Dispersion (CD), as well in cable management products and technology applications. The showcase includes educational seminars and short courses on topics like outside plant testing and troubleshooting, inspection and testing of connectors, and polarization-related measurements and an OSP Demonstration Area featuring a live emergency restoration performed on a working fiber-optic system.

Program Highlights:

  • Proper inspection and cleaning are vital to all fiber-optic installations. One of the scheduled presentations will feature a review of common contaminants and how to safely inspect, identify and clean optical connectors in manufacturing and outside plant applications. (Cleaning Demo - Tuesday, March 27 at 11 a.m.)
  • FTTx is the technology that brings the bandwidth of optical fiber to the users, and the impact of delivering fiber directly to the user can be seen worldwide. This technology and its many applications will continue to grow as service providers seek to take advantage of the amazing power of optical fiber. (Various Presentations – Wednesday, March 28, 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
  • Discover how coarse and dense wavelength division multiplexing are changing the world of fiber optic communications from long haul and oceanic systems to the massive needs of FTTx. DWDM challenged the technology during the communications explosion of the past and led to the low-cost CWDM systems that are being designed and built today. Learn about the current status of these technologies.  (DWDM Testing and Technology – Tuesday, March 27, 2 p.m.)

About OFC/NFOEC:

Since 1985, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) has provided an annual backdrop for the optical communications field to network and share research and innovations. In 2004, OFC joined forces with the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) creating the largest and most comprehensive international event for optical communications. By combining an exposition of more than 600 companies, with a unique program of peer-reviewed technical programming and special focused educational sessions, OFC/NFOEC provides an unparalleled opportunity reaching every audience from service providers to optical equipment manufacturers and beyond.

OFC/NFOEC, www.ofcnfoec.org, is managed by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and co-sponsored by OSA, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Communications Society (IEEE/ComSoc) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (IEEE/LEOS). Acting as a non-financial technical co-sponsor is Telcordia Technologies, Inc.
