OSA Foundation's International Year of Light (IYL) Sponsorship Opportunities

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative that will highlight to the citizens of the world the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures, and for the development of society.

IYL Fast Facts

  • A resolution declaring 2015 the International Year of Light was passed by the full United Nations General Assembly on 20 December 2013.
  • The Optical Society is one of nine founding scientific organizations that worked to obtain the formal declaration.
  • The International Year of Light will consist of coordinated activities on national, regional and international levels.

How You Can Participate with The OSA Foundation

The OSA Foundation is seeking sponsors to support several IYL-themed programs in 2015.  These opportunities include:
  1. IYL Youth Science Education Outreach Grants
  2. IYL Educational Poster Series
  3. IYL Hands-on Classroom Demonstration Kits

IYL Youth Science Education Outreach Grants

Fund youth science education outreach grants so that OSA Student Chapters and Local Sections can provide pre-college students with optics activities and demonstrations that introduce them to the science of light.

  • Grants are awarded to OSA Student Chapters and Local Sections and double as a professional development activity
  • Grants impact an average of five OSA Members and 45 students (depending on the program) and are distributed globally.

IYL Educational Poster Series

Fund an educational poster series exploring the science of light. This year’s series will focus on Microscopy and the Power of Light. Posters will introduce pre-college students to optics concepts and come equipped with a downloadable guidebook to help educators incorporate activities into their lesson plans.

  • Series will include posters on "Microscopy" and "Power of Light" and come with lesson plans
  • Posters are distributed globally to OSA Student Chapters and Local Sections, teachers, parents and other education enthusiasts (and available online for download)
  • Each poster series reaches an estimated 55 students (per year)
    • Provides 16,000 posters

IYL Hands-On Classroom Demonstration Kit

Fund the official IYL Educational Kit. This kit will be distributed to OSA Student Chapters & Local Sections and education enthusiasts around the world to introduce students 8+ to optics through a hands-on activity.

  • This is the official IYL Kit (Tech Light Lab Kit)
  • The kit was selected by a committee of volunteers representing multiple scientific organizations
  • The kit and accompanying guidebook will be customized for IYL
  • Additional classroom activities utilizing the kit will be available online 
  • Kits will be distributed globally to introduce students to optics in celebration of IYL
    • Provides 1,600 kits
