International Services

OSA’s membership and activities include a global community of scientists, educators, engineers, technicians, students and business leaders with an interest in optics and photonics. OSA is committed to fostering the global optics and photonics community, particularly in countries with developing optics communities.

OSA has a significant international presence

At present, OSA has more than 14,000 members from 80 countries and over 100 student chapters in 32 countries. Forty percent of OSA members are international.       

OSA is committed to fostering the global optics and photonics community

  • Members in developing nations receive an OSA dues discount.
  • OSA has an international agreement with the Australian Optical Society, Chinese Optical and the Mexican Optical Society that gives their members a discount on OSA dues.
  • OSA sponsors two international conferences − CLEO/Europe and CLEO/Pacific Rim − which are among the most important conferences in the field.
  • Approximately 70% of OSA journal authors are from outside of the U.S.
  • The Society is actively working to encourage involvement of international scientists in OSA leadership committees and councils.
  • The OSA International Council supports a number of programs linked to the goal of fostering the international optics and photonics community.
