Guidelines of the Optical Society of America on the Use of Animals and Humans in Research:

It is the expectation of the Optical Society of America that research using animals and human subjects reported at the meetings and in the publications of the Society will have been conducted in a manner consistent with National Institutes of Health guidelines or their equivalent. The relevant NIH publications are Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/labrats, published by National Academy of Sciences, ISBN 0-309-05377-3) and Protection of Human Subjects (Code of Federal Regulations, 45 CFR 46, http://ohsr.od.nih.gov/mpa/mpa.html). The latter is based on established and internationally recognized ethical principles regarding rights and welfare of individuals participating in research activities.
