    A team of European scientists has deliberately triggered electrical activity in thunderclouds for the first time, according to a new paper in the latest issue of Optics Express, the Optical Society’s (OSA) open-access journal. They did this by aiming high-power pulses of laser light into a thunderstorm.

    The Optical Society of America (OSA) is thrilled to announce that its journal Optics Express (www.OpticsExpress.org) has been selected for indexing and inclusion in the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) MEDLINE® (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) bibliographic database. Optics Express is the fourth OSA journal to be selected, joining the Journal of the Optical Society of America A: Optics, Image Science and Vision; Applied Optics; and Optics Letters.

    Corning, Incorporated and the OSA Foundation today announced the winner of the inaugural Corning Outstanding Student Paper Award Competition, which recognizes future leaders in optical communications. Frederik Van Laere, Ghent Univ.-IMEC, Belgium was awarded top honors for his paper, "Multifunctional Photonic Crystal Compact Demux-Detector on InP."
