  The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is the recipient of a 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP). Honored for its collaborative project with the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Lighten Up! Discovering the Science of Light took top honors in the Curriculum, Science Instruction Book, Grades 6 – 8 category.

  Optics Letters, Optics Express Top-Rated Journals in 2007

  The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that based on "impact factor," or the number of citations compared to the number of papers published, its journals Optics Letters and Optics Express are the most heavily cited journals in optics and photonics. According to the 2007 Journal Citation Report®, the Thomson Reuters rankings for journal citations, these two publications received the highest impact factor rankings of all optics journals.

  Scientists in Japan Design First Optical Pacemaker for Laboratory Research

  The world's first optical pacemaker is described in an article published today in Optics Express, the Optical Society’s open-access journal. A team of scientists at Osaka University in Japan show that powerful, but very short, laser pulses can help control the beating of heart muscle cells.

  Top Students Receive Travel Grants for CLEO

  Funded through an endowment to the Optical Society of America Foundation by Milton and Rosalind Chang, the Incubic/Milton Chang Travel Grant has been awarded to 10 graduate students who will present papers during the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) this week in San Jose, Calif. The 10 students coming to CLEO from six different countries were chosen from among 80 highly-qualified applicants.

  The Photonic Applications, Systems and Technologies (PhAST) Conference and Laser Focus World magazine are pleased to announce that Coherent, Inc. has been selected as the recipient of this year’s PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award. The award recognizes the company for the OPSL-577-3 for its twin embodiment of technical and application innovation in exploiting the wavelength and power scalability of optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology.

  OSA Announces 2008-2009 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows

  The Optical Society (OSA), along with co-sponsors SPIE and the Materials Research Society (MRS), has selected its 2008-2009 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows. Robert Saunders, a post-doctoral fellow in the Duke Advanced Imaging Laboratories, will serve as the Arthur H. Guenther Congressional Fellow (co-sponsored with SPIE) and Amit Mistry, a science policy intern at Research! America, will serve as the OSA/MRS Congressional Fellow.
