    The Optical Society (OSA) today announced the winners of the LaserFest Laser Graffiti Video Contest. OSA Student Chapters from universities around the world entered the contest as part of LaserFest, the scientific community’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the demonstration of the first working laser.

    The Optical Society (OSA) will host two optics and photonics meetings in Karlsruhe, Germany: The Advanced Photonics Congress and the Renewable Energy Congress, 21-24 June, at the Karlsruhe-Messe und Kongress. Both events will include a focus on technical breakthroughs in optics and photonics, including research affecting the areas of alternative energy and the environment.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) and Optical Research Associates (ORA®) are pleased to announce the establishment of the Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grant. Funded by ORA as a memorial to their former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert, this program recognizes the research excellence of students in the areas of optical engineering, lens design, and/or illumination design.

    The Optical Society (OSA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the approval of 162 senior members—the first class of OSA members to achieve this new distinction. Senior membership provides well-established individuals with the opportunity to request a designation that recognizes their experience and professional accomplishments or service within the field of optics and photonics.

    The Optical Society (OSA) is recognizing U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) today as its 2010 Advocate of Optics. Rep. Giffords was chosen for this recognition for her work on H.R.3585, the Solar Technology Roadmap Act.

    The Optical Society (OSA) today announced that it will host two energy meetings in Tucson: The Imaging and Applied Optics Congress, June 7-8, at the Westin La Paloma, and the Optical Interference Coatings Topical Meeting, June 6-11, at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. Both events will include a focus on technical breakthroughs in optics and photonics affecting the areas of alternative energy and the environment.

    OSA's OpticsForKids Website Receives Silver Honors Award from the Parents' Choice Foundation

    The Optical Society’s (OSA) website for youth education, OpticsForKids.org, was recently awarded Silver Honors from the Parents’ Choice Foundation for the spring of 2010. The Parents' Choice Silver Honors are given to excellent products that are designed to entertain and help children develop universally ethical attitudes, and rigorous standards and skills.
