Tom Hausken Joins the Optical Society as Senior Advisor, Engineering and Applications
    25 June 2012
The Optical Society (OSA) announced today that Tom Hausken has joined the staff as senior advisor, engineering and applications. In this position, Hausken will support a number of OSA’s industry focused activities, including the programs of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA), a division of OSA.

  • Art and Optics Converge to Preserve Frescos: Reflected Infrared Light Unlocks New Details of Renaissance Paintings
Art and Optics Converge to Preserve Frescos: Reflected Infrared Light Unlocks New Details of Renaissance Paintings
    18 June 2012
When restoring damaged and faded works of art, artists often employ lasers and other sophisticated imaging techniques to study intricate details, analyze pigments, and search for subtle defects not visible to the naked eye. To refine what can be seen during the restoration process even further, a team of Italian researchers has developed a new imaging tool that can capture features not otherwise detectable with the naked eye or current imaging techniques.

  • OSA Foundation Furthers Commitment To Optics Youth Education

OSA, SPIE and MRS Announce 2012-2013 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows
    31 May 2012
The Optical Society (OSA), SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and the Materials Research Society (MRS) are pleased to announce their 2012-2013 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows. Chris Schaffer, a professor at Cornell University, will serve as the Arthur H. Guenther Congressional Fellow co-sponsored by OSA and SPIE, and Mirvat Abdelhaq, a recent graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, will serve as the OSA/MRS Congressional Fellow. Each will serve one-year terms working as special legislative assistants on the staffs of congressional offices or committees in Washington, D.C.

  • Sensing the Infrared: Researchers Improve Infrared Detectors Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
Sensing the Infrared: Researchers Improve Infrared Detectors Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
    23 May 2012
Whether used in telescopes or optoelectronic communications, infrared detectors must be continuously cooled to avoid being overwhelmed by stray thermal radiation. Now, a team of researchers from Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Duke University (USA) is harnessing the remarkable properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to create highly sensitive, “uncooled” photovoltaic infrared detectors.

  • New Microscope Uses Rainbow of Light to Image the Flow of Individual Blood Cells
New Microscope Uses Rainbow of Light to Image the Flow of Individual Blood Cells
    21 May 2012
Blood tests convey vital medical information, but the sight of a needle often causes anxiety and results take time. A new device developed by a team of researchers in Israel, however, can reveal much the same information as traditional blood test in real-time, simply by shining a light through the skin. This optical instrument, no bigger than a breadbox, is able to provide high-resolution images of blood coursing through our veins without the need for harsh and short-lived fluorescent dyes.
