  Sensing the Infrared: Researchers Improve Infrared Detectors Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

  Whether used in telescopes or optoelectronic communications, infrared detectors must be continuously cooled to avoid being overwhelmed by stray thermal radiation. Now, a team of researchers from Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Duke University (USA) is harnessing the remarkable properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) to create highly sensitive, “uncooled” photovoltaic infrared detectors.

  New Microscope Uses Rainbow of Light to Image the Flow of Individual Blood Cells

  Blood tests convey vital medical information, but the sight of a needle often causes anxiety and results take time. A new device developed by a team of researchers in Israel, however, can reveal much the same information as traditional blood test in real-time, simply by shining a light through the skin. This optical instrument, no bigger than a breadbox, is able to provide high-resolution images of blood coursing through our veins without the need for harsh and short-lived fluorescent dyes.

  CLEO: 2012 Wraps Up in San Jose

  CLEO: 2012, concluded in San Jose last week after six days of technical and business programming highlighting the latest research and developments in the fields of lasers and electro-optics. Attendees heard presentations on ultrafast lasers, OCT, optical sensing, and nanophotonic devices from some of the top scientists, engineers, and business people around the world.

  OSA and SPIE Honor R. Barry Johnson with 2012 Goodman Book Writing Award

  The Optical Society (OSA) and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, announced this week that R. Barry Johnson of Alabama A&M University is the recipient of the 2012 Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for Lens Design Fundamentals, Second Edition, a substantially revised and expanded update to the late Rudolf Kingslake’s 1978 First Edition.

  OSA Foundation Awards Travel Grants to 15 Students for CLEO: 2012

  Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition Winners Announced

  The OSA Foundation (OSAF), HRL Laboratories LLC, the IEEE Photonics Society and the APS Division of Laser Science are pleased to announce Jeffrey Driscoll of Columbia University, USA as the winner of the annual Theodore Maiman Student Paper Competition. Driscoll won for his paper “First Demonstration of Quasi-Phase-Matched Four-Wave-Mixing in Silicon Waveguides.”The grand prize and two honorable mentions were presented yesterday during the Plenary and Awards Ceremony of the Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics (CLEO: 2012) at the San Jose Convention Center.

  The Optical Society Launches Innovative Products and Services for Digital Library Users

  The Optical Society (OSA) today announced the launch of several enhancements to its digital library, Optics InfoBase. Central to the new services that have launched is the reinvention of its journal article interface. With this new interface, users can more easily access and browse each article’s full-text, article-level metrics, interactive and embedded equations, and more than 200,000 images via the new Optics ImageBank product. Additionally, today’s initial launch allows OSA the opportunity to make functional adjustments to all of these innovative offerings based on user feedback. The goal is to refine each new offering over the next six months.

  Screening for Breast Cancer Without X-rays: Lasers and Sound Merge in Promising Diagnostic Technique

  X-ray mammography is an important diagnostic tool in the fight against breast cancer, but it has certain drawbacks that limit its effectiveness. For example, it can give in false positive and negative results; it also exposes women to low doses of ionizing radiation, which – while accepted as safe – still carry some risk.

  CLEO: 2012, the Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics, brings together the world’s foremost scientists and engineers working in the field of laser science. From May 6 – 11 in San Jose, more than 1,800 technical presentations, with content stemming from fundamental laser science to photonic applications and products will be presented in fields such as ultrafast lasers, energy-efficient optics, quantum electronics, biotechnology and more.
