    The OSA Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign for the Siegman International Summer School on Lasers, named in honor of Anthony E. Siegman, Optical Society (OSA) past president and founding member of the OSA Foundation Board. Siegman passed away in October 2011 at the age of 79.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) is pleased to announce the student travel grant recipients for the Optical Society’s (OSA) Advanced Photonics Congress held in Colorado Springs, Colo. June 15-18 and OSA’s Imaging and Applied Optics Congress held in Monterey, Calif., June 24-28. The OSAF Student Travel Grant Program awards grants to students working in or studying science in qualifying developing nations so they can attend OSA-managed technical meetings and conferences. This round of winners represents three countries from three continents.

    Using the compound eyes of the humble moth as their inspiration, an international team of physicists has developed new nanoscale materials that could someday reduce the radiation dosages received by patients getting X-rayed, while improving the resolution of the resulting images.

    The Optical Society (OSA) today announced its journals have again generated the most citations and largest number of articles of any publisher in the optics category of the 2011 Journal Citation Reports® (Thomson Reuters JCR, 2011). In addition, OSA’s newest journal, Biomedical Optics Express, which launched in August 2010, debuted on the optics list with an Impact Factor of 2.333, the highest of any new optics journal this year.

    The OSA Foundation (OSAF) today announced Matthew N. Barnum of the University of Arizona and Anthony J. Visconti of the University of Rochester are the recipients of the 2012 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grant. The grant was established by Optical Research Associates (ORA®), now the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys, Inc., as a memorial to ORA’s former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert. The grant recognizes the research excellence of graduate students in the areas of optical engineering, lens design, and/or illumination design.

    The Optical Society (OSA) announced today that Tom Hausken has joined the staff as senior advisor, engineering and applications. In this position, Hausken will support a number of OSA’s industry focused activities, including the programs of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA), a division of OSA.
