Content Technology Architect, Publishing

The Optical Society seeks a Content Technology Architect in its Publishing Department to manage technology-related workflow and quality-control procedures for a portfolio of highly regarded optics and photonics journals. The Content Technology Architect will work with publishing staff to establish and refine technological procedures for modeling, storing, and quality checking journal and meeting content in a MarkLogic database. This person will also assist with and lead projects for content repair and enhancement across journal titles, including projects that involve semantic enrichment.

The successful candidate will have an excellent working knowledge of XML and XML-related technologies such as XQuery and XPath. Prior experience with MarkLogic is not required, though experience with XML databases of any type is a plus. The Content Technology Architect must be able to work collaboratively across workgroups, have strong project-management skills, meet multiple tight deadlines, and demonstrate fine attention to detail.

A Bachelor's degree is required, along with work experience and technical training that demonstrate competency in relevant XML technologies.

Executive Assistant

The Optical Society seeks a seasoned Executive Assistant to work closely with the CEO to provide a high level of administrative support. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: overseeing heavy scheduling and extensive calendar management; coordinating complex domestic and international travel; processing detailed expense reports on a monthly basis; preparing and compiling support documentation for meetings and conference calls; maintaining extensive filing system; preparing correspondences; work on special projects as needed.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years' experience acting as the primary support to a C level executive, bachelor's degree preferred. Requirements include: ability to work with minimal supervision; utilize excellent judgment to make independent decisions; unflappable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; polished and sophisticated with excellent verbal and written communication skills; team-oriented with the ability to work independently; exceptional customer service mindset; strong analytical, organizational and project management skills; possess a proactive instinct; proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Financial Analyst

OSA's Finance Department is seeking a Financial Analyst to support the planning, development and analysis of OSA program and corporate-wide budgets. The successful candidate will support the annual budgeting, forecasting and multi-year planning processes; analyzes trends in business line revenue and expenses and operations to identify potential issues and opportunities; provides ad hoc analyses to support executive decision-making; provides business analysis for development of budgeting and reporting tools, serves as backup administrator; writes reports and creates graphical presentation of data; verifies integrity of report and presentation data; supports preparation of board materials and collects dashboard key performance indicators and benchmark data with similar organizations.

Requirements include: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred; three to five years of experience with budgeting, analysis, forecasting, and financial and management reporting; and experience implementing or enhancing ERP and/or budgeting and reporting tools. Microsoft Dynamics SL, Solver/BI360 and Tableau experience desired.

Knowledge of accounting principles required, but not experience as an accountant; Advanced proficiency of Excel (Power Excel user), including pivot tables, data manipulation, formulas, and analysis tools. Strong Powerpoint, Word, Access and Adobe capabilities. Query development with OLAP, MS Access, SQL and other relational database tools desired; Have a high level of accuracy and thoughtfulness in executing responsibilities and deliverables; understands sense of urgency and importance of deadlines. Ability to partner and collaborate with staff at all levels; must be highly organized, work well under pressure, and be deadline and results driven.

Journal Coordinator

OSA seeks a Journal Coordinator for its Publishing Department. Responsibilities involve overseeing peer review of prestigious scientific research journals, ensuring timely processing of manuscripts with daily communication with off-site editors, authors and reviewers, and facilitating a smooth transfer of manuscripts to production. Workflow software and spreadsheet reports will be used to monitor all aspects of peer review on a daily and weekly basis. A successful candidate will demonstrates effective communication skills, organizational skills, good judgment, attention to detail, and computer literacy on a daily basis.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee online submissions and peer review for three prestigious OSA research journals (3500+ submissions per year)
  • Performs “quality check” of all new submissions and style/format review of papers accepted for publication
  • Provide support to Editor in Chief and topical editors, advising them on journal policies and procedures
  • Use reports and other tools to monitor workflow and journal productivity, follow-up with editors, reviewers and authors as needed
  • Ensure confidentiality of sensitive information, abiding by the ethical standards of peer-review administration
  • Maintain regular interaction with journal editors and production staff
  • Maintain accurate and complete peer reviewer profiles

Requirements

Senior Production Editor

The Optical Society seeks a Senior Production Editor in its Publishing Department to perform content-preparation, online-publishing, and quality-control tasks for a portfolio of highly regarded optics and photonics journals. The Senior Production Editor will be part of an energetic team that carries out XML tagging, light language edits, and page layout in MS Word and LaTeX for physics articles containing equations, tables, figures, and multimedia files. Candidate should have significant experience with MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, and scholarly citations. Experience with HTML, XML, image files, and video files are a plus. Ability to work under multiple tight deadlines with precise attention to detail is a must. Although this job does not involve traditional copyediting or graphic design, it offers the right candidate the exciting opportunity to be part of a world-class and highly progressive journal publishing team

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in English, journalism, or science. One year of scientific copyediting or editorial production required.

Senior Web Developer

The Optical Society seeks a Senior Web Application Developer with 4+ years of ASP.NET and C# developer experience to join its Information Technology Department.

The ideal candidate will have an opportunity to participate in projects involving different systems and technologies at all stages of the project lifecycle, including Building ASP.NET-based web sites; Building C# applications for integration projects as well as for importing data into various CMS and SQL data stores; utilizing XML technologies with C#, as well as using languages such as XSLT or XQuery; and Tuning CMS application servers for performance and site integrity issues.

BA/BS in Computer Science (or related field) and/or equivalent work experience required; 4+ years' experience of ASP.NET, C#, SQL, XML programming is required. Additional experience in ColdFusion programming is a big plus. This work includes integrating with commercial off-the-shelf enterprise applications such as ERP and CRM applications. Avectra netForum AMS experience or MarkLogic XML database experience a big plus. Strong communication, problem-solving, and prioritization skills, and must enjoy acquiring skills in new technologies required.

Web Communications Manager

OSA seeks a dynamic, self-motivated Web Communications Manager to manage all OSA web sites including SEO, strategy, site enhancements, content management, analytics and mobile sites/apps. The successful candidate will manage and implement all development and related projects of osa.org and 5 other OSA web sites. Excellent communication, interpersonal and project management skills required. Candidate must be a high-energy person who is detailed oriented, can multi-task daily in a fast paced environment. Bachelor's degree in marketing with three-five years in web site management and SEO required. Demonstrated improvements in user experience and SEO desired. Experience in video production and graphic design is a plus.
