American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Science Funding Information Resource
On Feb. 17, 2009 President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the economic stimulus bill. The legislation is designed to jumpstart the economy by preserving and creating jobs while investing in infrastructure, education, energy efficiency and science.
President Obama has stated that he wants the funding distributed as quickly as possible with a high degree of accountability. To view the timeline, visit Recovery.gov.
With regard to science funding, the bill contains:
- $2.5 billion for the National Science Foundation (NSF) for basic research in fundamental science and engineering and $100 million for improving instruction in science, technology, engineering, and math education.
- $1.6 billion for the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, which funds research in areas like climate science, biofuels, high-energy physics, nuclear physics and fusion energy sciences.
- $400 million for the DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program, which supports high-risk research into energy sources and efficiency in collaboration with industry.
- $580 million overall for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), including funding for renovation, repair and modernization of NIST facilities.
- $7 billion for extending broadband services to underserved communities across the country as distributed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
