Brazil Minister of Science and Technology Sergio Machado Rezende Participates in LAOP Plenary
The Minister of Science and Technology, Sergio Rezende, participated in the Latin American Conference of Optics and Photonics (LAOP) 2010 on 27 September 2010. The meeting, which runs until Thursday, 30 September 2010, is an opportunity for scientists and researchers to showcase their work and promote the exchange of ideas. Rezende’s presentation discussed the history of scientific-technological development of the country and its climb towards innovation.
LAOP is sponsored by the Brazilian Physics Society (SBF) in partnership with the Optical Society (OSA). Among the topics of discussion are Optical Design and Instrumentation, Optics in Information Science, Optics and Nonlinear Quantum, Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy with Lasers, Photonics, Micro and Nanophotonics, Biophotonics and Applications in Biomedicine and Science and Technology Lasers.
According to Anderson Gomes, LAOP General Chair and professor in the department of physics at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), during the four-day meeting, representatives from 19 countries will have the opportunity to discuss the use of photonics solutions as a way to confront global problems. "We discuss its use in pollution control, in the area of health among other areas,” Gomes said. “Moreover, a great success of the meeting is the presence of students. Over 40% of the audience here are in academia.”
According to Gomes, who also holds the post of Secretary for Science, Technology and Environment for the State of Pernambuco, this is the first event held by OSA in a Latin American country.
